Cantiamo String Quartet with guest clarinetist, Deanna J. Smith
Comprised of four musicians from the Minneapolis, MN area, the Cantiamo String Quartet has been playing together since 2003. The quartet was formed at the University of Minnesota School of Music, where the Cantiamos studied extensively with Thomas Rosenberg, formerly of the Chester String Quartet and the Artaria String Quartet of Boston. The quartet has also been privileged to work under notable artists such as the renowned pianist Lydia Artymiw, clarinetist Burt Hara, and saxophonist Eugene Rousseau, and has performed in masterclasses for many distinguished quartets, including the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award-winning Pacifica Quartet, the Borromeo String Quartet, and Paul Katz of the Cleveland String Quartet.
Since their inception, the Cantiamo String Quartet has performed works from the entire range of standard chamber music, from the earliest quartets of Haydn to several works written in the twenty-first century. The quartet has worked with many other musicians, performing both some of the standard great chamber music literature and other more creative contemporary projects, including residencies with the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and the Alchemy Project in 2008, and performances on the Electric Eyes Festival in 2007. Beginning in their first year together, the quartet has had an important history of working with living composers and has been a vibrant advocate of new chamber music. Already in their short career the quartet has given seven premieres and given several other works their second or third performances.
The quartet is also committed to education and outreach to communities and younger generations of musicians. As a part of touring to various cities in Minnesota and Wisconsin the Cantiamo String Quartet has given demonstration recitals in several high schools and other community venues. These programs have ranged from deconstructing Beethoven quartets to demonstrating the different instruments of the string quartet to very young prospective string students. The quartet members have also served as section coaches for youth orchestra rehearsals as well as coaches for younger chamber groups.
The name Cantiamo comes from the Italian word which means “we sing,” which is indicative both of their notably lyrical playing and very often the nature of their rehearsals.
